Hi,

Who has ever heard about the bull blood? It is a full body red wine from the North of Hungary, have a look to the map:

eger

Grape Variety

Egri Bikavér is a wine based on the Blaufränkisch, known locally as Kékfrankos and other grapes.  Officially Egri Bikavér must contain at least three of the following 13 grapes:

Kadarka, Kékfrankos, Blauer Portugieser (Kékoportó), Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Menoire (known as Kékmedoc, or Médoc noir before), Pinot noir, Syrah, Turán, Bíborkadarka and the modern Austrian crossings, Blauburger and Zweigelt.

Egri Bikavér Superior

In 2004 a new level, Egri Bikavér Superior was introduced. In this case, at least 5 out of the 13 recommended varieties must be used and also a lower yield must be applied (maximum 60 hl/ha). It needs to age at least 12 months in wooden cask and 6 months in bottle before releasing on the market. Regulations on the composition of the blend, the wine making technology and minimum alcohol level also differs from normal Egri Bikavér. All those regulations are aiming for an overall higher quality wine.

So far I did not have the chance to try many wines fromthis region, one that I know very well is Bolyki’s Bull Blood

Description:

colourd: dark red

nose: rich, tarry, blackcherries and slightly leather scents

mouth: it has very ripe black fruits and a meaty character. The nice acidity and the round tannins make it very pleasant to the palate, it is intense but with a short aftertaste, ideal with meat dishes and cheese, all the rich food that need to clean the palate. The wine is heavy and a bit tight but the acidity makes it lighter and ideal for food. Very convivial wine.

This wine will surprise your guest!  The taste is amazing, the name of the wine and even the label is very explicative! 🙂 Make sure that your guests will know that there is no more Bull’s Blood in the wine especially if they are veg!

All the best and enjoy,

HardCork
